Mid-winter is always a great time for events in the Texas Rio Grand Valley, and the week of Feb. 20-27 is no exception! Get ready for a little South Texas culture this week when Brownsville's Charro Days kicks off for a week of entertainment and fun and for three rollicking days in Edinburg for the annual FIESTA!
Staring on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017, CHARRO DAYS kicks off with a two-nation celebration fun for residents and visitors of both sides of the Texas-Mexico border! Enjoy the opening event Sunday beginning at noon when the Baile Del Sol Street Dance gets underway downtown featuring food, live music and folkloric dancers galore, just a couple of blocks from the International Bridge. The event takes place at 455 Elizabeth Street in Brownsville and the admission is free.
Then it's time for the Brownsville Independent School District Children’s Charro Days Parade begins at 2:30 on Thursday, Feb. 23 (2017). All parades go down Elizabeth Street through Historic Downtown Brownsville. Following the parade, take in the Noche Mexicano features Noe Pro, folkloric dances and Mariachi 7 Leguas and food. Tickets are $25 per person and are required at the door. You can purchase tickets at Charro Days headquarters.
Then Friday, Feb. 24, don't miss the Charro Days illuminated Night Parade at 7 p.m., to be staged downtown. Saturday night the is the big Grand International Charro Days Parade) on Elizabeth Street. Earlier on Saturday, its the Charro Days Fiesta Costume Ball opening at 8 p.m. Five-time Grammy Winner Little Joe & La Familia, The Federales and Mariachi 7 Leguas will be performing. Tickets are $25 per person and are required at the door. Purchase tickets at Charro Days headquarters.
The annual Sombrero Fest, featuring music from the border area, will be held Feb. 23-25 in Washington Park, at the intersection of 7th and Madison Streets in downtown Brownsville. Admission is $10 daily.
If the two-nation celebration isn't enough for your cultural and social blast, get ready to Fiesta in Edinburg over the weekend!
FIESTA TIME IN EDINBURG!
Fiesta Edinburg will be moving to a new location this year at H-E-B Park located at 1616 S. Raul Longoria Rd. in Edinburg. The Festival will run February 23-26 and will have major attractions such as the Heart of America Carnival, Fiesta “Mardi Gras” Parade, Conjunto and Folklorico Competition, Family Fun Zone, Contacto Animal, regional food, arts/crafts plus top notch entertainment including country superstar Josh Turner and Los Cadetes de Linares de Rosendo Cantu.
Fiesta Edinburg, the Edinburg Chamber’s largest celebration, is a fun quality of life event for the city of Edinburg and the Rio Grande Valley,
Admission to enter on Friday and Saturday is $10 per person. Parking is free. Concert tickets are sold separately.
Events open Thursday for the young at heart with the Heart of America Carnival from 6 to 10 p.m.
On Friday the gates open at 5 p.m. and the Contacto Animal Show is at 8 p.m.
In the Fiesta Amphitheater Lauren Corzine will perform at 6 p.m. Eddie Saenz takes the stage at 7:15 and the Powel Brothers perform at 8:30. At 10 p.m. Josh Turner takes the stage.
On Saturday the Fiesta Edinburg Parade begins at 10 a.m. at the county courthouse parking lot, and moves down Closner south to Cats Stadium.
At noon the park gates open. A Family Fun Zone will operate from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. A Folklorico and Conjunto Invitational Competition will take place from 1:30 to 5 p.m. At 3, 6 and 8 p.m. the Contacto Animal Show will be presented.
At 6 p.m. in the Fiesta Amphitheater, Resplandor will perform. At 7:15 p.m. Notable takes the stage. At 8:40 p.m. Zamorales comes on stage and at 10 p.m. Los Cadetes Rosendo Cantu finish off the night.
On Sunday the Heart of American Carnival will be open from 4 to 10 p.m.
Don’t miss the Fiesta Mercado Food Court and the Beverage Garden.
